Baseball falls to No. 24 Misericordia, 3-0

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 9, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team suffered its first setback on Monday, falling to No. 24 Misericordia 3-0.

The Ducks saw their record fall to 3-1 on the season, while Misericordia improves to 7-1.

The Cougars wasted no time scoring, plating two runs in the top of the first inning with a two out rally. A pair of infield singles put runners on first and second, with junior D.J. Navoczynski hitting a single to right field to score the first run of the game. Junior Steve Cuccio followed that up with another single to score the second run of the inning.

Junior Jayson Yano settled down after the rocky start, allowing only two more baserunners over the next five innings. Senior Gary Boardman relieved him and kept the Cougars off the board until the top of the eighth when junior Mike Cumerford drove in the final run of the game with a double to left center.

The Ducks threatened in the bottom of eighth, after junior Jonathan Toro singled and senior Brian Hennelly reached on a walk. But senior Corey Lee recorded a strike out a check swing to escape the jam.

Toro finished with two of the three Duck hits on the afternoon. Yano finished with two strikeouts in his six innings without walking anyone and Boardman fanned three in his three innings of work.

Junior Cory Vogeli threw seven innings of two hit ball for the Cougars, who received multiple hit games from Navoczynski, Comerford and junior Chris Boroch.

Stevens is back in action Friday when they take on SUNY Old Westbury at 3:30 p.m. before embarking on their Spring Break trip.
