HOUGHTON, N.Y. (April 17, 2015) – Eight different players notched goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Houghton College 16-7 in Empire 8 action.
The Ducks upped their record to 10-3, 5-1 E8 while the Highlanders dropped to 5-7, 2-3 E8.
Stevens tallied the first three markers over the course of seven minutes thanks to goals from junior
Erika Wilcox and sophomores
Mariel Haubrich and
Kathleen Kalbian. The Highlanders scored the next two in in a 47 span to cut the deficit to one. The rest of the half belonged to the visitors as Wilcox tallied three goals with freshmen
Bridget Reed and
Julianna Ricci along with sophomore Laura Robers, Kalbian and senior
Caitlyn Hughes each scoring to help the Ducks open an 11-3 halftime lead.
Houghton came out of the break with the first four goals, cutting the deficit in half. Meghan Oswald scored twice with Jennifer Zacchigna and Chandler Jones each scoring in the first 6:37 to start a comeback. However the comeback would be short-lived, as Ricci netted one nearly three minutes later to put the Ducks back in control. Stevens scored the final five markers as sophomore
Caroline DeLuca potted two goals back-to-back with Ricci adding the final goal to complete her hat trick.
Stevens out-shot Houghton 32-13 while forcing the Highlanders into 16 failed clear attempts. Kalbian finished with six shots and three ground balls to go along with her four points while Wilcox had eight shots and five points and team high eight draw controls.
Zacchigna and Oswald each had two goals and an assist for Houghton while Kourtnie Franklin made 12 saves in the defeat.
Stevens is back in action tomorrow, continuing their road trip as they travel to Alfred for a 1 p.m. draw.
