MONTCLAIR, N.J. (August 28, 2015) – Junior
Raba Nassif scored the game-winning goal in the 62
nd minute as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team upset #12 Montclair State University 2-1 Tuesday.
The Red Hawks (0-1) put the first shot on goal just 3:57 in, as Martina Landeka was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper
Lindsey Mahnken. Over the first 19 minutes, Stevens mustered only three shots, and only put one on target but they made that one count. Senior
Carly Bean took a pass from Nassif for the Ducks (1-0) first goal of the 2015 season.
The Stevens defense held Montclair without a shot over a 37 minute stretch in the first period, but MSU got the tying goal from Erin Sullivan with five minutes remaining to send the game tied heading into halftime.
10 minutes into the second stanza, Mahnken would make a key stop on Jennie Hornstra to keep the score knotted at one. After shots by Bean and junior
Gabby Mathelier, Nassif took a pass from Bean and teetered down the sideline before ripping a shot into the back of the net to give Ducks a one goal lead again.
Montclair threatened in the 73
rd minute, as Stefanie Gomes ripped a shot that caught iron and rang off the crossbar. The Red Hawks had four corner kicks over the final 12 minutes, but the Ducks defense thwarted every attempt. With 26 seconds left, Hornstra hit a shot that sailed wide which concluded the contest.
Bean and Nassif each had five shots in the contest, with freshman
Zisi Komar registering two in her collegiate debut. Mahnken made two saves and collected the win.
Molly Barrow made six saves in the loss, while Hornstra tallied two shots.
The Ducks face another tough test Saturday as they travel to Pennsylvania take on #3 Messiah College at 7 p.m.
