MADISON, N.J. (September 17, 2015) – Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey sophomore
Victoria Alvarez scored in the 68th minute Thursday to lead the Ducks to a 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickson University-Florham.
The win moved Stevens to 3-2 while FDU fell to 3-3.
Alvarez assisted on the Ducks other goal to give her a game-high three points, while junior
Emily Stukenborg made seven saves in goal.
FDU came out strong with a series of penalty corners and shots in the sixth and seventh minutes, however Stukenborg and the Ducks defense were able to combat every chance to keep the game scoreless. Stevens answered back with a trio of shots in the 26th minute, but were unable to find the back of the cage on any.
The Ducks continued their pressure through the remainder of the first half and into the second, before finally being rewarded with the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute.
Off a right side pass from Alvarez, junior
Taylor Welch fired high and connected with the back of the cage for the score. The goal was the third of the season for Welch, placing her second on the team in scoring.
The Devils were able to respond with the equalizer nine minutes later, but with the clock nearing the end of regulation, Alvarez was able to score off a rebound from junior
Nolie Prouty's shot to put Stevens back ahead.
FDU attempted to answer back with a trio of penalty corners and a shot on goal in the final minute, but Stukenborg and the Ducks defense stepped-up and were able to diffuse each opportunity before the final horn blew.
The Ducks will continue their road trip Saturday with a 12 p.m. game at Houghton College.
