HOUGHTON, N.Y. (September 19, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team gained an early lead that it didn't relinquish Saturday in a 2-1, Empire 8 Conference win over Houghton College.
The third straight win brought the Stevens record to 4-2 (1-1), while Houghton fell to 3-2 (1-1).
Junior
Taylor Welch and senior
Dailyn Brook made-up the Ducks with one goal each, while junior
Emily Stukenborg made three saves in goal. As a team, the Ducks outshot Houghton 16-7.
The Ducks came out strong with shots over the first five minutes before Welch found the back of the cage with an unassisted goal in the sixth minute. The goal was the fourth of the season for Welch, good for second on the team.
The Stevens defense took control from that point, limiting Houghton to just two shots over the next 25 minutes, and keeping them off the board for the reminder of the half. The 1-0 lead held through the first few minutes of the second as well until the Ducks added some insurance in the 52nd minute.
Off a feed from junior
Nolie Prouty, Brook sent a ball past Houghton's defense for her third goal of the season. The assist was Prouty's fifth, putting her second on the team with nine points.
Houghton was able to inch closer with a score eight minutes later, however it's all they would get the rest of the afternoon as Stevens' defense held the Highlanders shot-loss over the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
The Ducks will return to Hoboken Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game with Cabrini College.
