HOBOKEN, N.J. (SEPTEMBER 19, 2015) – Sophomore
Lindsey Mahnken made five saves to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Houghton College Saturday.
The victory moved the Ducks record to 4-2, 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference while Houghton fell to 4-3, 0-1 in the E8.
Stevens fired the first eight shots of the contest but didn't break through until the 17
th minute. After a hand ball in the box against the Highlanders, senior
Carly Bean stepped up to take the penalty kick and beat the keeper to give the home team the 1-0 edge. Two minutes later, Mahnken came up with a save on Nikki Garns to hold the lead for Stevens.
Mahnken made two more stops in the first 22 minutes of the second half before the Ducks tacked on an insurance goal in the 76
th minute. Freshman
Olivia Butera sent a ball in off a corner kick and sophomore
Sammy Mount was able to get her head on the ball and deposited it into the back of the net for her first. The assist was the first point of Butera's career.
Junior
Raba Nassif tallied five shots while freshman
Zisi Komar and senior
Kristen Goncalves each had three.
Garns and Bailey Shattell notched three shots apiece with goalie Shawna Sprout making two saves in the defeat.
The Ducks continue their home stand when they battle Farmingdale State University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
