Women’s Soccer Draws With Ithaca, 1-1

ITHACA, N.Y. (SEPTEMBER 25, 2015) – Junior Gabby Mathelier scored the lone goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team drew with Ithaca College 1-1 Saturday.

The tie brings the Ducks record to 5-2-1, 1-0-1 in the Empire 8 Conference while Ithaca is 4-3-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the E8.

A back and forth opening 45 minutes saw each side register a number of chances. Stevens had shots on goal in the seventh, 25th and 45th minutes but each attempt was thwarted by Bombers goalie Beth Coppolecchia. Ithaca's best chance came in the 12th minute, as a shot by Sarah Woychick was stopped by sophomore Lindsey Mahnken.

The Ducks appeared to catch a break in the 55th minute as they were awarded a penalty kick, but freshman Zisi Komar was robbed by Coppolecchia on the attempt. However five minutes later, Mathelier hit a shot from 25 yards that got past the keeper for her second tally in as many games.

The score remained the save until the 76th minute, when this time Ithaca was given a penalty kick, and it was Kelsey King who connected to level the score. The Bombers had a shot in the 88th minute which was snared by Mahnken and Coppolecchia made a key stop on freshman Olivia Butera with 24 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

After Ithaca opened the first extra period with a shot, the Ducks had back to back corner kicks that they could not connect on. Holly Niemiec had a chance to win it for the Bombers with two seconds left but her shot sailed wide.

Stevens peppered the Bombers with shots in the second overtime, as Komar, junior Raba Nassif, and Mathelier had several attempts that missed. Mathelier had the best chance, as her ball in the 106th minute was cleared off the goal line just before it was able to cross.

Nassif fired 10 shots in the contest, while Mathelier finished with five attempts. Komar and Butera each recorded four with Mahnken making three saves.

King had six shots and Coppolecchia made 12 stops for the Bombers.

Stevens is back in action Wednesday when they host Drew University at 7 p.m.
