No. 6 Men’s Volleyball Sweep Day Two Of Clash At Kean

UNION, N.J. (January 30, 2016) – The No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept Rivier College and Lasell College at the Clash At Kean tournament Saturday.

The Ducks moved to 4-1, while Rivier sunk to 2-2 and Lasell dropped to 2-4.

No. 6 Stevens 3, Rivier 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19)
The Ducks hit a blistering .397 in the three sets against Rivier, and committed only four attack errors over the first two sets. Stevens scored six of the first seven points in the first stanza, and the Raiders were unable to mount a comeback. The Raiders were able to close the gap to eight, but sophomore Thomas Burrell slammed home back-to-back kills to end the first set.

With the second set tied at nine, the Ducks used back-to-back service aces from senior Tim Ferriter to start a 4-0 run. The Raiders closed to within four, but the Ducks held off their opponents and capped the set off once again with a kill from Burrell.

The Raiders jumped out to a 5-4 lead, but Stevens received seven straight points from the powerful serve of freshman Jacob Stillman. Once again Rivier whittled the gap to just to two markers, but junior Gabe Shankweiler put down a kill to start a 4-0 run. The Ducks were able to take advantage of a pair of unforced errors to close out the match.

Stevens held the edge to every statistical category, including kills, aces and blocks. Senior Chris Vaughan led the way with 13 kills and six digs, while Shankweiler had 12 kills and six digs as well.

Ian Wolski led Rivier with nine kills and six kills in the setback.

No 6 Stevens 3, Lasell 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-14)
The Ducks once again hit well, committing only nine errors against 39 kills, while their opponents had 18 errors with only 25 kills. Stevens controlled play to start the first set, but the Lasers were able to get the gap to 14-11. The Ducks scored four of the next five to reestablish control, and Burrell spiked home a pass from Scott Russell to put Stevens up 1-0.

In the second frame, a kill from Lasell's Jeffrey Vautrin brought the score to 12-10, but the Ducks tallied six of the next seven, forcing the Lasers into a timeout. Lasell would get no closer than five the rest of the way, as Stevens closed out the set with the final four points.

The Ducks never trailed in the final period, and a mid-set 12-3 run would put the Lasers in a hole they could never recover from. Ferriter put home a kill from freshman Jacob Patterson to end the match, and sent the Ducks back to Hoboken with a pair of victories.

Shankweiler was tops on the squad with 11 kills and three services aces, while junior Jordan Stuart chipped in nine kills. Burrell was a force at the net, registering five kills and five block assists.

The Ducks will be back in action on February 5, taking on Division I Sacred Heart University.
