HOBOKEN, N.J. (OCTOBER 1, 2016) – The No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team picked up its ninth straight victory with a 2-0 win over St. John Fisher Saturday.
The Ducks improved to 9-0-0 and 3-0-0 in the Empire 8 Conference, while the Cardinals dropped to 2-5-1, 1-3-0 in the E8.
Stevens had a chance to open the scoring just 36 seconds in. Senior
Gabby Mathelier had a shot that was saved, and sophomore
Zisi Komar rang the rebound off the post. Komar was eventually ruled offside to stop the threat. The Ducks had another chance in the 10th minute, as a perfect through pass by freshman
Julia Panko found the feet of senior
Raba Nassif. Nassif however, was unable to get a shot off as Cardinal keeper Gabriella Cotugno smothered the ball with a diving attempt.
Nassif broke through in the 17th minute, heading in a perfect cross from sophomore
Olivia Butera. The Ducks continued the pressure, attempting 22 shots in the first 45 minutes, but Cotugmo made seven first half stops.
With just under 36 minutes left in the second stanza, Komar finally converted a chance, belting a shot from inside the box that glanced off Cotugno's hands and into the net. Nassif nearly doubled her output in the 73rd minute, as a shot by the senior was deflected away by a sprawling Cotugno. The Cardinals best chance came in the 84th minute, as a shot by Taryn Guinta off a corner was stopped by sophomore
Madi Chollett.
The Ducks offense fired 35 shots to the Cardinals five, led by nine from Komar. Panko and Nassif each fired off six shots, and senior
Gabby Mathelier collected an assist on the Nassif tally. Chollett and junior
Lindsey Mahnken combined to make three saves.
Cotugno made 11 saves in the setback for the Cardinals.
Stevens will be back in action Wednesday, battling in-state rival Montclair State at home in a 4 p.m. tilt.
