HOUGHTON, N.Y. (October 7, 2016) – Senior
Raba Nassif scored twice and added an assist to power the No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team past Houghton 3-0 Saturday.
Stevens improved to 10-0-0, 4-0-0 in the Empire 8 while Houghton dropped to 5-4-2, 1-2-0 in conference.
The Ducks fired at will during the opening 45 minutes of play, taking 16 shots. Six occurred before the game was 15 minutes old, and shot number seven was the one that broke the 0-0 deadlock. Taking a pass from freshman
Julia Panko, Nassif took a shot that eluded the keeper for her eighth tally of the year.
Houghton had a chances in the 19th and 22nd minute to find the equalizer, but attempts by Jenny Zacchigna were stopped by junior
Lindsey Mahnken. Nassif added to her team-leading goal total in the 32nd minute, scoring an unassisted goal to double the Ducks advantage. Highlander keeper Rachael Fortney was busy in the first stanza, making eight saves.
The Highlanders opened the second period with three shots, however sophomore
Madi Chollett was there to make the stop each time. Panko and sophomore
Zisi Komar each had two chances to extend the Ducks lead midway through the half, but Sadie Dunnett, who entered at halftime, made the saves to keep the 2-0 margin. With time winding down, sophomore
Misha Brewster converted a pass from Nassif for her third tally of the season in the 72nd minute. Stevens locked down in the second half, allowing no shot attempts over the final 33:18 of the game.
Komar and Nassif combined for 12 shot attempts, while Brewster had six. Nassif recorded her fourth multi-goal game of the season, while also regaining the team lead in assists on the Brewster goal.\
It'll be a quick turnaround for the Ducks, who travel to face Alfred tomorrow at noon.
