Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Past NYU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (October 19, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team topped NYU 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 Wednesday night.

The Ducks picked up their third straight win and moved to 25-3 on the season, while NYU fell to 14-11.

After calling a timeout down 6-2, Stevens scored six of the next seven to jump ahead. The lead was short-lived as a service error put the visitors back in a two point hole. With senior Mary Tobin serving, the Ducks rolled off five straight to grab an advantage they did not surrender. NYU would never reclaim the lead, and the Ducks recorded five of the last seven markers of the set, capped off with a kill from senior Christina Sciarra.

Once again, the hosts grabbed an early edge, pouncing ahead 10-6. A 4-0 spurt by sophomore Brianna Perez would even the frame at 10, and the two sides traded four 2-0 runs a piece, before Tobin sparked a 7-0 gap. The rally was finished with a thunderous double-stuff from Perez and freshman Sara Hain. After NYU fended off one set point, Hain took a set Perez and hammered home the period ending kill.

With NYU trimming the Stevens lead in set three down to a mere two after a kill by Rayne Ellis, the Ducks rolled off six straight tallies, including three aces from Sciarra. Hain ended the match with back-to-back kills off assists from Perez.

Hain hit .385 with seven kills and five total blocks, while Tobin had a double-double of 12 kills and 18 assists. Junior Sydni Horner tallied a team-best 24 digs.

The Ducks will be back in action on Friday, taking on Susquehanna before concluding Empire 8 Conference action against St. John Fisher and Alfred Saturday.
