HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 22, 2016) – Hartwick scored with less than two minutes left on the clock Saturday in a 2-1 loss for the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team in Hoboken.
The loss dropped Stevens to 9-7 (5-2), while Hartwick moved to 12-3 (5-2).
Senior
Nolie Prouty tallied Stevens' goal and contributed three shots on goal, while senior
Emily Stukenborg made seven saves in the cage.
Hartwick narrowly held the edge in shots 13-12, but Stevens tallied one more corner.
Each side had its opportunities in the game's first nine minutes with a combined five corners and two shots, before Stevens broke through in the 14th minute with a score from Prouty off a corner from junior
Katti Thomasian.
Defense took control for both teams from there as a pair of attempts from sophomore
Hannah Silvestri were each blocked midway through the first, followed by a Stukenborg save in the closing minutes to keep Stevens in the lead heading into the break.
Hartwick finally broke through 10 minutes into the second off a rebounded shot, but Stukenborg prevented more with saves in the 48th and 52nd minutes.
Stukenborg made three more saves during a nine-minute stretch late in regulation, before the Hawks grabbed the lead with less than two minutes to go out of a scrum in front of the cage.
Stevens had one final opportunity to tie the game with a corner in the final minute, but Prouty's attempt was stopped by Hartwick goalie Shannon Carter to seal the loss.
The Ducks will head back out onto the road Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at Stockton.
