Women’s Soccer Clinches Top Spot In E8

ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 23, 2016) – The No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship Sunday with a 9-0 rout over Elmira.

The win moved Stevens to 14-1 (7-0), while the loss dropped Elmira to 1-12-1 (0-7-0).

Senior Raba Nassif led all scorers with four goals off seven shots, while sophomore Zisi Komar netted two. Freshman Julia Panko scored once with one assist, in addition to a goal for sophomore Madi Chollett and senior Gabby Mathelier

Junior Lindsey Mahnken and Chollett combined for six saves in net, each playing the entirely of one half.

As a team, the Ducks outshot Elmira by a whopping 40-8 margin, and tallied 13 corners to the Soaring Eagles' three. The nine goals were the most since Stevens scored the same amount in the season opener, while the 40 shots were the second most this fall.

Komar got the Ducks scoring going with a goal less than five minutes in after hitting the post earlier, before Nassif scored twice within a one-minute stretch shortly after. Elmira was able to keep the Ducks off the board for the following 14 minutes, until Mathelier broke the streak off a feed from sophomore Olivia Butera.

Chollett added her name to the scoring column in the 42nd minute, before Nassif completed her opening-half hat trick with a score in the final minute off a header from the corner.

Komar extended the lead to seven five minutes into the second, followed by a penalty-kick goal from Nassif in the 54th that made in 8-0.

Panko capped the rout 18 minutes later off an assist from junior Gabby Pagkalinawan as the Ducks cruised the rest of the way to the victory.

The Ducks will be back in action Tuesday night when they host Western Connecticut at 6 p.m. in Hoboken.
