Women’s Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller

HOBOKEN, N.J. (OCTOBER 5, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up a five set victory over Vassar Wednesday night.

The Ducks move to 19-2 overall on the season, while Vassar drops to 14-7 with the 23-25. 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11 win.

After a dropping a highly-contested first in which they lead by as many as seven, Stevens battled back to take the next two, going up 2-1. With the Ducks trailing 12-10 in the second, sophomore Brianna Perez put the Ducks ahead for good at the service line, coupled with a pair of block assists from freshman Shelby Stewart. Stewart ended the second frame with a kill off an errant overpass.

Vassar led 7-4 in set three before a kill from senior Mary Tobin evened things up. A Brewer service error tied things up once again at 19, and a kill by freshman Taleen Mitchell and a double-block by junior Emily Singleton and freshman Sara Hain pushed Stevens ahead. The visitors were able to even the score for the final time at 21, before Stevens scored four of the final five, capped off with a solo block from Stewart.

The Brewers were able to outhit Stevens .182 to .103 in the fourth set to bring up the deciding fifth stanza. A key 3-0 spurt in the middle the period, finished with a kill from Hain forced Vassar into a timeout at 6-2. The timeout paid dividends and the guests evened up at six, as Stevens took a timeout of their own.

Five of the next six markers went to Stevens, and Vassar was unable to climb out of the hole. A block by Perez and Hain put Stevens up five and senior Christina Sciarra pounded home a match-sealing kill to send the near two-hour affair.

Sciarra had 15 kills and three blocks, while Hain went for 15 kills and six blocks. Not to be out done, Stewart had 10 kills and six rejections. Seniors Mary Tobin and Becca Youngman each had over 10 digs, with Youngman totaling 10, one off her career-best.

The Ducks will travel to Houghton Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference tri-match against Houghton and Elmira.
