ALFRED, N.Y. (October 8, 2016) – Freshman
Julia Panko tallied the lone goal of the contest in the 60th minute as the No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team topped Alfred 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Ducks won for the second consecutive day, as they beat Houghton 3-0 yesterday. With the win, the team moved to 11-0-0, 5-0-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.
The Saxons had an early opportunity, but a shot in the sixth minute was stopped by junior
Lindsey Mahnken. Midway through the period, senior
Rachel Chavkin had three chances to break the tie game, but each was blocked or went wide. Sophomore
Zisi Komar had a golden opportunity in the 36th minute, but Keira Palumbo made a defensive save.
Three minutes later, Komar had another shot that rang off the crossbar. Off a corner late in the period, junior
Megan Lynes got her head on the ball, but the attempt sailed wide. Stevens dominated play, having 21 shots to a mere two from Alfred, while holding an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Subbing in the 58th minute, Panko made an immediate impact. After dribbling through a maze of defenders, the freshman hammered home a shot from 12 yards out to give the Ducks a lead. For the final 30 minutes, the Duck defense allowed to no corner kicks or shot attempts to preserve the victory.
The 47 shots attempted were a season-high, while the nine shots by Komar also were a season-best. Nine Ducks had three or more shot attempts, while junior
Sammy Mount and Panko had four on target. Sophomore
Madi Chollett picked up the victory, playing the second half.
