ROCHESTER, N.Y. (November 4, 2016) – St. John Fisher scored nine minutes into overtime Friday to hand the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team a 1-0 loss in the Empire 8 Championship semifinal.
The loss ends Stevens' season at 9-10, while Fisher (17-2) will move onto tomorrow's final.
Freshman
Michaela Thompson registered Stevens' goal off an assist from junior
Victoria Alvarez, while senior
Emily Stukenborg made 13 saves in the cage.
Fisher narrowly outshot Stevens 24-20, while the Ducks dominated in corners, 12-3.
Fisher opened the contest with three shots over the game's first 11 minutes, before breaking through in the 12th minute to put Stevens in a one-goal hole. Stevens returned the favor with pressure of its own with just under 10 minutes remaining, but the ball sailed wide twice while the last two were each blocked.
Stevens continued its onslaught late into the first, before finally being rewarded with the equalizer five minutes into the second. Off a feed from Alvarez, Thompson muscled the ball through the Fisher defense's sticks to tie the game at one.
Each side had its offensive spurts over the remainder of regulation, but goalies Stukenborg and Ashley Maynard each stopped each chance to send the game into overtime.
Fisher started the extra frame with three shots on goal that were each saved, before breaking through on their fifth shot of the period to seal the Stevens loss.
