Women’s Basketball Falls In Regular Season Finale

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 20, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team dropped its final regular season game 75-72 to St. John Fisher College Saturday.

Despite the loss, the Ducks clinched the Empire 8 Conference regular season championship, and will host the tournament next weekend. The Ducks are 19-6 and 15-1 in E8 play, while Fisher is 22-3, and 15-1 in E8 as well.

Stevens went ahead 11-8 on a three-pointer by junior Erica Guketlov, but Fisher answered with a trey from Mary Kate Cusack. Three points would be the biggest lead either side would have in the opening stanza, as a layup by sophomore Anna Toke reestablished the three point edge, but the Cardinals countered with four straight to close out quarter one.

The second quarter was a carbon copy, before a jumper by senior Dylan Krause and a pair from the charity stripe by sophomore Sydney Darby gave the visitors their biggest lead of the half at six points. The Cards closed out with a 6-0 spurt to knot the half at 36 all.

Fisher bridged the closing of the first half and start of the second, connecting on 13 straight markers, capped off with a layup from Emily Piacentini to go ahead seven. Krause and senior Kaitlyn Astel would score to cut the gap to two points, but that would be as close as they would get in the period.

Piacentini hit a pair from the line to put Fisher back up five, but Astel would tally five consecutive to tie the game at 56 with 7:06 left. Trailing by four with three minutes to go, senior Miranda Ripken and Astel hit back to back jumpers to tie everything at 68. Astel hit a layup with two seconds left to cut the deficit to one point, but Cusack iced the game with a pair from the line.

Astel led all scorers with 26 points to along with six rebounds, while Ripken had 13 points. Toke had eight points, seven boards, four assists and three blocks, with sophomore Megan Brown chipping in eight points off the bench.

Cusack led Fisher with 24 points, while Claire Walsh and Caroline Robertson each had 13 points.
