UNION, N.J. (February 21, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling to the College at Brockport 7-5.
The Ducks dropped to 2-1, while Brockport won its season opener.
The Golden Eagles used a five run second inning to break jump ahead, as they received a two RBI singles and a pair of RBI doubles to tally runs. Junior 
Zeph Walters lasted only 1 1/3 innings before departing with an injury. Freshman 
Charlie Ruegger made his collegiate debut in relief of Walters, surrendering six hits and four runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings.
The Ducks bats awoke in the bottom of the second, as junior 
Nolan Bennett reached on an infield single. After senior 
Bret Viola reached on an error, junior 
P.J. Wiegartner slammed a three run home run to left center, cutting the deficit to two. Brockport would add their final two runs in the top of the third on a wild pitch and a run scoring single.
Stevens staged a two-out rally to get within two again, as junior 
Garrett Wells was hit with a pitch. Senior 
Nick Sieber would single him over to second, Bennett would single through the left side of the infield. A throwing error would allow Wells to score, as the Ducks got to within 7-5.
The Ducks had one final chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman 
Carlos Leon singled, and senior 
Jonathan Toro walked, putting two on and no out. But the Brockport would record a strikeout and a double play to end the game.
Sieber and Bennett each went 2-for-4, while Leon had his second career three-hit game. Senior 
Greg Jakusik and sophomore 
Quinn DiPasquale each recorded two shutout innings.
Brockport had four players with multi-hit games, while Sam McCumiskey picked up the win in relief, tossing 2 2/3 innings out of the pen.
The Ducks are back in action Wednesday, when they host No. 38 Keystone College.
