HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 21, 2016) – The No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team served 59 service aces in a pair of straight set wins over Rust College and York College Sunday.
The Ducks moved to 11-3, while Rust dropped to 0-9 and York to 4-7.
No. 6 Stevens 3, Rust 0 (25-0, 25-1, 25-2)Junior
Gabe Shankweiler broke the school-record for service aces in a match tallying 16. More impressively, he did it in one set. Rust started with a serve, but junior
Jordan Stuart buried a kill to force a side-out. Shankweiler stepped up to the service line and served 24 consecutive points as the Ducks shutout the Bearcats.
In the second set, senior
John Eddins did his best Shankweiler imitation, and served 10 straight, before Zicais Silas recorded the lone kill of the match. Freshman
Joshua Hinton would then serve 14 in a row to end the set. Freshmen
Pasquale Gencarelli and
Cooper Diamond each notched three aces each in the third set, and senior
Scott Wright powered home nine of his own.
The Ducks eclipsed the previous school-record for aces in a match, recording 44 total. More impressively, they hit .983 with no errors, and held the Bearcats to a -.533 attack percentage.
No. 6 Stevens 3, York 0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-7)The Ducks managed to hold York to a .000 hitting percentage, while committing only five attack errors over the three sets. After not recording any blocks against Rust, sophomore
Thomas Burrell had six blocks, as Stevens had nine total blocks as a team. Shanweiler led the Ducks with eight kills, while freshman
Dylan DeBoer and junior
Ian Bennett slammed home six kills.
Stuart, Eddins and senior
Ayal Ciobotaru led the ace brigade, serving up three, with Ciobotaru recording all three in the final set.
The Ducks are back in action Wednesday, taking on New Jersey City University.
