HOUGHTON, N.Y. (February 5, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team topped Houghton College 76-48 in Empire 8 Conference action Friday night.
The Ducks moved to 14-5 overall, and 10-0 in the E8, while Houghton fell to 8-12 and 2-9 in conference play.
The Highlanders held the Ducks off the scoreboard for the opening 3:20 and went ahead 4-2 on a layup by Brittany Lenart. But the Ducks offense woke up, as juniors
Erica Guketlov and
Daphne Ginn, along with seniors
Kaitlyn Astel and
Megan Petuskey all hit three pointers in a four minute stretch to open up a double digit first quarter lead.
The Ducks opened the second frame on a 9-2 run, capped off by a jumper from senior
Miranda Ripken. Houghton trimmed the deficit to four points with 3:42 left before halftime, but the Ducks closed the half with eight of the final nine markers, as sophomore
Megan Brown sunk two from the charity stripe to give the visitors an 11 point halftime edge.
Stevens started the third stanza with seven straight points, and an Astel jumper put the Ducks up 20 points. Petuskey would add four straight points late in the third to extend the advantage even further. The Ducks defending was strong in the second half, limiting Houghton to just 25 total points.
13 Ducks scored points, and Astel led 5 players in double-figures with 12 points. Petuskey, Brown, Ripken and Guketlov all added 10 points, with the sophomore tandem of Brown and
Anna Toke each grabbing seven boards. Toke also handed out a team-best four assists.
Elle Reed led Houghton with 15 points in the setback.
The Ducks will be in action tomorrow, taking on Alfred University at 4 p.m.
