HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 16, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team surrendered a goal with 46 seconds remaining in the third overtime Wednesday in a 10-9 loss to Montclair State University.
The loss dropped Stevens to 3-2, while Montclair moved to 4-2. The game was the second overtime contest between the two teams in as many years.
Senior
Erika Wilcox matched a season-high with five goals in addition to an assist and a pair of ground balls, while sophomore
Cami Santor scored twice to go along with two assists. In goal, sophomore
Stephanie Schnelzer made six saves.
As a team, the Ducks won five more times off the draw then Montclair, and tallied one more shot on goal.
Junior
Kathleen Kalbian got the Ducks on the board early with a free-position goal four minutes in, but the Red Hawks were able to answer with the equalizer in the 18th minute, before taking the lead shortly after that.
Stevens responded with a 4-0 run led by three goals from Wilcox to take a 5-2 lead late in the half, before Montclair snuck one in in the closing seconds to cut the lead to two heading into the break. The Ducks quickly regained the advantage in the second however with Wilcox's score from junior
Mariel Haubrich 52 seconds in.
Both teams traded goals over the next four minutes, before Montclair inched closer with a pair of goals four minutes apart midway through the half. Kasey Maguire connected on the equalizer soon after, but Wilcox grabbed the lead back for the Ducks off an unassisted goal with 8:16 to go.
Each team tallied one more as the Ducks held a one goal lead with five minutes remaining, but Montclair tallied the game-tying score with 3:28 to go to send the game to overtime.
Each team had its opportunities once there, before Montclair tallied the game-winner in the third.
The Ducks will be back in action Monday when the battle Fredonia at 10 a.m. in Bradenton, Fla.
