Women’s Lacrosse Falls In Florida

BRADENTON, Fla. (March 21, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a first-half deficit Monday in a 10-5 loss to Fredonia.

The loss dropped Stevens to 2-3, while Fredonia moved to 2-3.

The Ducks featured a balanced scoring attack with junior Kathleen Kalbian, senior Erika Wilcox, sophomore Cami Santor, junior Laura Roberts, and junior Mary Beth Irwin each recording goals. Sophomore Victoria Alvarez caused three turnovers on defense, while sophomore Stephanie Schnelzer saved four shots in goal.

As a team, the Ducks outshot Fredonia 20-17, and held the advantage in draw controls 13-4.

After a scoreless opening 10 minutes, Fredonia got the board first with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to put Stevens in a two-goal deficit. Santor provided an answer off a feed from Kalbian shortly after, but Fredonia responded with three unanswered to go up 5-1 with six minutes remaining in the half.

Both teams traded goals over the final four with Kalbian's free-position score before Fredonia opened the second half with two to put the Ducks down 8-2.

Stevens scored three of the next four sparked by Irwin's goal with 14:25 remaining, and capped with scores from Wilcox and Roberts, but it's as close as the Ducks would get the rest of the game as a Fredonia free-position goal with seven minutes to go sealed the 10-5 loss.

The Ducks will return to Hoboken Saturday for an 11 a.m. matchup with Ithaca College in the Empire 8 Conference opener, starting a run of five-straight games at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
