ORANGE, Calif. (March 22, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped its third straight game, falling to Chapman University 14-3 Tuesday.
The Ducks dropped to 7-8, and Chapman moved to 11-10.
With one on and out in the first inning, senior
Jayson Yano got a little defensive help to preserve the 0-0 score. Connor Larkin hit a flare into right field, but senior
Nick Sieber laid out for the diving catch to prevent extra bases.
The Panthers pushed across the first run in the bottom of the third, successfully executing a double steal with a runner scoring. Chapman added four more in the frame on a three-run home run by Larkin and an RBI single by Andrew Mendonca.
The Ducks threatened in the fifth, as junior
P.J. Wiegartner singled and freshman
Carlos Leon walked to lead off the inning. But Chapman got a strike out and a double play to escape the jam. In the home fifth, the Panthers racked up a four spot, three coming on RBI singles.
Stevens plated a run in the sixth, as senior
Nick Sieber ripped an RBI triple down the right field line to score junior
Nolan Bennett. Chapman potted two more in the sixth with two outs to further extend the lead.
Wiegartner and Leon delivered RBI singles in the eighth, but that was all the Ducks were able to push across. The Panthers added two more runs on a two-run homer by Tim Alhanati in the ninth.
Junior
Nolan Bennett went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and the Ducks as a team were able to draw six walks. Freshman
Danny Poidomani tossed an inning and a third of hitless relief, while Wiegartner collected a pair of hits.
Chapman pounded out 15 hits, led by Konnor Zickefoose 3-for-5 performance. Larkin and Alhanati led the hosts with three RBI's.
The Ducks will be back home Friday, taking on SUNY-Canton in a doubleheader to open Empire 8 Conference action.
