CLERMONT, Fla. (March 24, 2016) - Stevens Institute of Technology softball senior
Gavriella Risman-Jones delivered a walk-off single in the eighth inning Thursday, to clinch a 6-5 win for the Ducks over Wellesley College.
Combined with a 5-2 win over Fredonia State earlier in the day, the Ducks moved their season record to 8-2. Fredonia and Wellesley fell to 3-8 and 2-6 respectively with the losses.
Stevens 5, Fredonia 2Stevens went down scoreless in the top of the first, before Fredonia put-up two in their half of the inning off a one-out RBI double. The Ducks threatened with runners on in both the second and third, but finally broke through with two in the fifth.
Junior
Emily Sellitti started the rally with a lead-off single, and advanced to third when freshman
Katherine Tirabassi reached on an error in the next at-bat. Both scored two batters later after junior
Amanda DiLeo's fly ball was misplayed in centerfield.
On in relief, freshman
Christine LaRochelle worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth for a scoreless frame, allowing the Ducks to take the lead with three in the sixth off a Tirabassi three-run shot to left.
The three-run cushion was enough for LaRochelle who erased a leadoff walk in the sixth before setting down the side in order in the seventh to lock down the win.
Six different players tallied hits for the Ducks, while LaRochelle pitched three innings of shutout ball to earn her team-leading third win of the season. The home run was Tirabassi's second of the spring break trip.
Stevens 6, Wellesley 5Wellesley struck first with a run in the first, but Stevens answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning off a two-RBI double from sophomore
Corinne Loncar. Risman-Jones and sophomore
Farryl Groder each scored on the play after back-to-back singles to start the inning.
Wellesley responded with a run in the second, before adding two more in the fifth, but the Ducks answered with another multi-run inning in their half of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, DiLeo ripped a single up the middle to score Sellitti and sophomore
Lauren Shirley.
Stevens capped the rally three batters later when Tirabassi scored off an error at short from a batted ball from Groder.
Both teams went scoreless from there over the next two innings, before Risman-Jones delivered the knock-out blow with a walk-off single to score DiLeo in the eighth.
Loncar and DiLeo provided the bulk of the offense for the Ducks with two RBIs each, while freshman starter Marisa Cappello earned her third win of the season after allowing just two earned runs in eight innings of work.
UP NEXTThe Ducks will conclude their spring break trip tomorrow with matchups against No. 25 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 9 a.m., followed by Hope College at 11.
