CAMDEN, N.J. (March 29, 2016) – Seniors
Jayson Yano and
Bret Viola of the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team combined on a three-hit shutout to top No. 8/No.10 Rutgers University-Camden 4-0 Tuesday.
The Ducks moved to 11-8, while Camden fell to 10-3. The 4-0 decision marked the second time RU Camden has been limited to one run or less since last March; the other was a 3-1 win by Stevens last April.
With the bases loaded thanks to a walk and pair of singles in the top of the second, freshman
Matthew Pasko drove in the game's first run, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field. With Yano at bat, the Scarlet Raptors pitcher attempted a pickoff but the throw was errant and freshman
Carlos Leon scampered home. The Ducks tacked on a run in the third on an error by the third basemen, going up 3-0.
Yano struck out the side in the first, and allowed only two baserunners through three innings. After retiring the first two hitters in the fourth, the next two men reached base on an error and a walk. But Yano battled back to strike out Andujar Cedeno to end the threat. Yano allowed a runner to reach second in the fifth, but got a punchout and a groundout to first basemen
P.J. Wiegartner.
Stevens staged a two-out rally in the eighth to add an insurance run. Junior
Garrett Wells singled to right, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Leon and junior
Michael Mule' were hit by pitches to load the bases, to bring up Pasko. Pasko was also hit with a pitch to drive in the freshman's second run of the game.
Viola, who entered in the fifth, ran into a situation in the eighth. Joe Brooks walked and Chris Jones singled, putting runners on first and second with one out. But Viola escaped the jam with a fielder's choice and a fly-out to end the frame.
Yano tossed five hitless innings, allowing just three walks and five strikeouts while also extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Viola earned his first save of the season, throwing the final four innings striking out two. Wells and Mule' each recorded a pair of hits, with Wells scoring two runs.
Jones had two of the three hits for Rutgers-Camden.
The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow, taking on Utica in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
