NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 30, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team scored seven unanswered runs in game two of a doubleheader with New York University Wednesday, but left the bases loaded in the seventh to fall 8-7.
The Ducks did take game one 8-5 however, placing their season record at 9-5. NYU moved to 10-12 with the split.
Stevens 8, NYU 5After threatening with the bases loaded in the first, Stevens broke through with two in the second off a two-RBI single from sophomore
Farryl Groder. Junior
Emily Sellitti and sophomore
Amanda DiLeo scored on the play after being put in scoring position off a sacrifice bunt from senior
Gavriella Risman-Jones.
NYU answered with two in their half of the inning, but after going down scoreless in the third Stevens rallied back with three in the fourth to go up 5-2.
With the bases loaded, sophomore
Corinne Loncar drove in one off a sacrifice fly to left, before sophomore
Lauren Shirley broke the inning open with a two-run ground-rule double to right center.
A solo homer brought the Violets to within 5-3, but Stevens responded in the fifth with RBI hits from Risman-Jones and Groder to extend the lead back to four.
Each team scored a run in their next time up before NYU added another in the sixth, but it's as close as they would get the rest of the game as freshman starter
Marissa Cappello worked a one-two-three seventh to seal the win.
Cappello struck out a career-high seven in the complete game effort to earn her fourth win of the season, while Groder led the Ducks at the plate with a 4-for-5 day including three RBIs.
NYU 8, Stevens 7NYU built its lead with two in the first, before a six-run fourth inning put the Ducks in an eight-run hole. It wouldn't last long however as Stevens answered with six of its own in the fifth to get back to within two.
Junior
Jessica Rees sparked the rally with a single up the middle, before an error and fielder's choice put runners at second and third with one out. Another NYU error off the bat of Risman-Jones in the next at bat loaded the bases, before an error off the bat of Groder pushed across the first run of the inning.
Freshman
Julia DeCandia followed with a walk to score one, followed by a Shirley double to score two more. Sellitti nearly added more with a lineout following Shirley, before sophomore
Olivia Gemma capped the outburst with a two-RBI single to left.
Another NYU error in the sixth brought the Ducks to within one, but after loading the bases in the seventh, NYU induced a pop-up and ground-out to seal the Stevens loss.
Shirley and Gemma each tallied a pair of RBIs, while freshman pitcher
Christine LaRochelle struck out two in two innings of shut-out relief.
UP NEXTThe Ducks will travel to Alfred University on April 1 for the Empire 8 Conference opener, before heading to Houghton College Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
