MAHWAH, N.J. (March 30, 2016) – The No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team topped in-state rival Ramapo College in straight sets Wednesday night.
The Ducks moved to 25-5 with the 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 win. Ramapo fell to 15-14 with the setback.
The two sides traded the first 10 points before sophomore
Thomas Burrell recorded a kill and senior
Chris Vaughan served up an ace. A Paul Close kill brought the Roadrunners within one point at 15-14, but Stevens exploded for six of the next seven. Ramapo closed to within 23-20 thanks to a trio of Duck errors, but Vaughan notched a kill to end the run, and one point later the Ducks took the set.
The Roadrunners went up 11-7 thanks to a pair of Connor Brandow service aces, forcing Stevens into taking a timeout. The Ducks used five separate 2-0 runs to finally pull ahead 20-18. After Ducks service error, Stevens rattled off the final four markers, capped off with a solo block from Burrell.
After a Duck attack error made the score 5-3 in the final set, the Ducks used a 6-1 spurt to break the frame open. The hosts made things interesting, getting to within 13-10, but Stevens went on a 4-0 run to further the gap. An unforced attack error by Ramapo handed the match to the Ducks, as they won their third straight match.
Senior
Tim Ferriter recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs, while Burrell led the middles with six kills and five blocks. Junior
Jordan Stuart contributed six kills and seven total blocks, while junior
Scott Russell handed out 28 assists.
The Ducks will host MIT and Penn State-Behrend in the final home contest of the year on Saturday.
