GLASSBORO, N.J. (March 5, 2016) – Senior
Erika Wilcox and junior
Kathleen Kalbian combined for seven goals Saturday in the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team's 9-3 road-win over Rowan University.
The win moved Stevens to 2-0, while Rowan fell to 0-1.
Wilcox scored four times off six shots while Kalbian added three along with an assist and four ground balls. Defensively, junior
Betsy Crossland and sophomore
Victoria Alvarez each caused three turnovers, and sophomore goalie
Stephanie Schnelzer made 10 saves.
As a team, the Ducks won the draw control battle 8-6, and out-shot Rowan 17-16.
After both teams went scoreless over the initial 13 minutes, sophomore
Julianna Ricci got the Ducks the lead with a goal during the 17-minute mark off a feed from Kalbian. Rowan tallied the equalizer seven minutes later, but Kalbian regained the lead for Stevens just past the five-minute mark with an unassisted score.
Junior
Laura Roberts extended the lead to two off a free-position goal in the final two minutes, giving the Ducks the 3-1 lead heading into the break.
Rowan inched closer in the second with a goal eight minutes in, however Kalbian answered with 20 minutes remaining with the free position goal to put Stevens up 4-2.
Rowan was once again able to answer less than two minutes later to pull within one, but it's as close as they would get the rest of the afternoon as three straight goals from Wilcox over the next nine minutes gave the Ducks the comfortable four-goal lead.
Kalbian extended it to five during the six minute mark, before Wilcox capped the Stevens scoring off a feed from sophomore
Cami Santor to seal the 9-3 win.
The Ducks will face a tough test in their next game when they travel to defending national runner-up and No. 2 Trinity College Wednesday night at 5 p.m.
