HARTFORD, Conn. (March 9, 2016) – No. 2 Trinity College scored with 20 second left in the second overtime Wednesday to defeat the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team, 10-9.
The loss dropped Stevens to 2-1, while Trinity moved to 3-0.
Sophomore
Stephanie Schnelzer matched a career-high with 11 saves, while senior
Erika Wilcox scored five goals off six shots. Junior
Kathleen Kalbian and sophomore
Cami Santor each scored twice, in addition to a pair of assists from Santor.
The Ducks went 3-for-4 off free position shots, and caused five Trinity turnovers.
Trinity jumped-out to the early two goal lead with a pair of scores over the first five minutes, before Kalbian got Stevens on the board with an unassisted goal during the 22nd minute. Trinity responded with a goal two minutes later to regain to two-goal lead, however Santor kept the Ducks close with a goal off a feed from freshman
Mackenzie Metzler.
Both teams traded goals again over the next five minutes, before the Ducks ended the half on a 2-0 run off goals from Kalbian and Wilcox to take a one-goal lead heading into the break.
Wilcox extended the lead to three with a pair of goals in the second's first four minutes, followed by Santor's unassisted goal in minute 20 to put Stevens up four.
Trinity responded with two to pull within two, before Wilcox extended the lead back to three during the 16th minute off a free-position shot. It's all the scoring Stevens would do however as Trinity scored three unanswered in the final 14 minutes to send the game into overtime.
Each team got one shot on goal in the first extra frame, but Trinity controlled possession in the second before registering the game-winning goal with 20 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Ducks will be back in action on March 16 when they host Montclair State University at 4 p.m.
