Cappello Pitches Softball To Split With Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. (April 13, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader to Ramapo College 4-1, but rebounded behind a strong pitching performance in game two from freshman Marissa Cappello in a 2-1 win.

The spilt placed Stevens' record at 15-9, while Ramapo moved to 14-8.

Ramapo 4, Stevens 1
Stevens grabbed the second-inning lead with freshman Madison Telles' RBI double to right center to score junior Amanda DiLeo, but Ramapo answered with the equalizer in their half of the inning to knot the game at one.

Ramapo held the Ducks scoreless in the third for the second time in the game, before taking the lead with three in the third off four hits.

The Ducks tried to answer with base runners in the fourth, fifth and sixith, before Ramapo worked around a lead-off walk in the seventh to seal the loss.

Rees led the Ducks at the plate with a 2-for-3 game, while Telles provided the offense with the team's only RBI. Freshman pitcher Christine LaRochelle took the loss, surrendering three earned runs off eight hits in six innings of work.

Stevens 2, Ramapo 1
Cappello worked around a pair of base runners in the bottom of the first, before retiring the side in order in the second and third to preserve the 0-0 tie.

Ramapo finally did push across a run in the fourth, but the Ducks answered in the top of the fifth off sophomore Farryl Groder's RBI single up the middle. Junior Jessica Rees scored on the play after doubling to right center to lead off the inning.

Cappello held the tie with a one-two-three fifth, before Stevens grabbed its first lead of the game with a run in the sixth. Sophomore Lauren Shirley lead-off the inning with a single and reached third off a double from sophomore Olivia Gemma, before scoring two at-bats later on a wild pitch.

Ramapo started the seventh with back-to-back singles, but Cappello nailed down the win by retiring the final three batters of the game.

Cappello went the distance, striking out four to earn her team-leading sixth win of the season. Gemma led the Ducks with two hits at the plate, while Groder provided the Ducks only RBI.
