HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 14, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell in walk-off fashion against Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham 17-16 Thursday, before dropping game two 10-5 in five innings.
The losses dropped Stevens to 15-11, while FDU moved to 11-9.
FDU 17, Stevens 16
Stevens went down in order in the first before FDU built its lead with five in their half of the inning off six hits. Stevens responded with two in the third off a two-RBI single from sophomore
Corinne Loncar, but FDU responded with a another five-spot in the third to go up 10-2.
The Ducks rallied with five in the fourth in an outburst sparked by a lead-off walk from junior
Jessica Rees. Junior
Gina Schnecker drove in the first of the inning with an RBI single to left, while Stevens also saw RBI hits from sophomore
Farryl Groder, Loncar, and sophomore
Olivia Gemma.
FDU answered back with two in the bottom of the inning, but the Ducks continued to chip away with four more in the sixth to get to within 12-11. With the bases loaded and one out, Stevens reached in four consecutive at bats capped by an RBI groundout from junior
Amanda DiLeo.
Stevens finally cracked the lead in the seventh off a three-run blast from sophomore
Lauren Shirley, followed by RBI doubles from Rees and DiLeo to give the Ducks the 16-12 advantage.
The lead wouldn't stick however as a three-run homer from FDU in the seventh brought the Devils to within one, before they eventually walked-off with a bases loaded walk with nobody out.
Loncar, Shirley, and Gemma each drove in three, while Rees and DiLeo each batted in two. Loncar's four hits set a new career high.
FDU 10, Stevens 5
Stevens jumped out to the early lead with two in the first off an RBI single from Loncar and a sacrifice fly from Shirley. Freshman starter
Christine LaRochelle held the lead with a scoreless first before FDU knotted the game at two with two in the second.
FDU broke the game open two innings later with six in the third, before tacking on two more with a pair of solo home runs in the fourth.
The Ducks rallied with three in the fifth off a two-run double from Loncar and an RBI single from Shirley, but playing conditions became too dark in the bottom of the inning to continue as the game was called after completing the frame.
Loncar led the Ducks with a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included three RBIs, while Shirley drove in two with a 1-for-2 game. Senior
Gavriella Risman-Jones and Groder each scored twice.
