WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 16, 2016) – Senior
Brianna Sandone and sophomore
Olivia Gemma surrendered a combined two runs in 14 innings Saturday to pitch the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team to a pair of 5-1 wins over Nazareth College.
The sweep moved Stevens to 17-11 (7-3), while Naz fell to 12-10 (0-4). Prior to game two, Stevens honored its two seniors,
Gavriella Risman-Jones and Sandone.
Stevens 5, Nazareth 1
A lead-off homer gave Naz the early first-inning lead, but Stevens answered in its half of the inning with sophomore Gemma's groundout to score Risman-Jones.
Both teams traded zeroes in the second before sophomore
Corinne Loncar gave the Ducks the lead with an RBI single to score Risman-Jones in the third.
Sophomore
Lauren Shirley extended the lead with a two-run shot in the fifth, followed by freshman
Madison Telles' solo homer in the sixth to put Stevens up 5-1.
The runs were more than enough for Sandone as the veteran worked around a lead-off single in the seventh to slam the door on the win.
Sandone scattered just three hits in the complete-game effort to earn her fourth win of the season, while Risman-Jones went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs. Shirley went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Loncar drove in one on a 2-for-4 day.
Stevens 5, Nazareth 1
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Gemma to score Risman-Jones gave the Ducks the one-run lead in the first, before Stevens added another in the third with Shirley's RBI single to score Loncar.
Gemma worked around a lead-off single in the fourth to preserve the lead, allowing Stevens to tack-on another with junior
Amanda DiLeo's sole homer in the fourth.
Stevens added another in the fifth with junior
Emily Sellitti's RBI single, followed by sophomore
Farryl Groder's RBI double in the sixth to score Telles.
Naz got one back with a two-out solo home run in the seventh, but Gemma retired the final batter of the game on a ground out to short to seal the win.
Gemma struck out a career-high eight while scattering five hits to earn her fourth win of the season, while Risman-Jones and Shirley each had multi-hit games.
