WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 17, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to No. 20 St. John Fisher College, 3-0 and 4-2.
The losses dropped Stevens to 17-13 (7-5), while Fisher moved to 23-5 (5-1).
Fisher 3, Stevens 0
Pitching dominated early on as Stevens freshman Marissa Cappllo and Fisher starter Lindsey Thayer traded zeroes over the first four innings. Fisher threatened with the bases loaded in the fourth, but Cappello induced a fly out to junior
Jessica Rees to end the inning.
Fisher finally broke through with three in the sixth off three consecutive three-out hits to put Stevens in a three-run hole.
The runs were unfortunately enough for Thayer who retired nine of the final 10 batters of the game to seal the loss
Senior
Gavriella Risman-Jones and sophomore
Corinne Loncar accounted for the Ducks two hits, while Cappello took the loss in the four-strike out complete game.
Fisher 4, Stevens 2
A two-run homer from sophomore
Lauren Shirley gave the Ducks the early first-inning lead, but Fisher responded with two in the second off an RBI single and sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals added another in the fourth off an infield single to take the 3-2 lead, before stranding a lead-off walk from Stevens in the fifth.
Stevens threatened again with Shirley's one-out single in the sixth, but Thayer responded by getting the next two out to preserve Fisher's one-run lead.
Fisher added a run of insurance in the seventh, before retiring the side in order in the Stevens half of the inning to seal the Ducks loss.
Shirley led the Ducks with two hits and two RBIs, while Risman-Jones and sophomore
Farryl Groder also each contributed hits.
