Sellitti Grand Slam Secures Softball Split

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 21, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology softball junior Emily Sellitti belted a grand slam in the sixth inning of game two against Stockton University (25-9) Thursday, catapulting the Ducks to the 6-3 win.

After a 3-0 loss in game one, Stevens' record moved to 20-14 with the split. The win clinches a third consecutive season of at least 20 wins for the Ducks.

Stevens 3, Stockton 0
Stockton pushed across an unearned run in the first to take the initial lead, but freshman starter Marissa Cappello responded by facing the minimum over the next two innings before working around a lead-off single in the fourth.

Cappello continued the overpowering performance with a one-two-three fifth, but Stockton added a pair of insurance runs by taking advantage of two Stevens miscues in the sixth.

The Ducks threatened after senior Gavriella Risman-Jones reached second in the sixth after a one-out single, and again in the seventh with sophomore Lauren Shirley's one-out single, but Stockton worked through the jam each time to seal the loss.

Risman-Jones and Shirley each tallied multi-hit games, while Cappello struck out five in the loss.

Stevens 6, Stockton 3
Stockton struck first with a run in the first, but freshman starter Christine LaRochelle worked out of further damage by inducing back-to-back infield pop-ups to strand runners at second and third.

The Ospreys tacked on two more in the third, but Stevens finally broke through with six in the fifth. Freshman Madison Telles sparked the rally with a lead-off single before scoring two batters later on Risman-Jones' triple.

A pair of Stockton errors in the next two at bats allowed Risman-Jones to score, followed by a grand slam from Sellitti to throttle Stevens into the lead, 6-3.

The runs were enough for LaRochelle as the rookie hurler worked around a pair of walks in the sixth, before retiring the side in order in the seventh to clinch the victory.

Sellitti led all hitters with four RBIs in a 1-for-2 day, while Risman-Jones went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. LaRochelle struck out one in the complete game effort to earn the win.
