Softball Suffers Sweep To Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. (April 23, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell 11-10 in see-saw battle in game one against Ithaca College Saturday, before falling 8-0 in five innings in game two.

The losses dropped Stevens to 20-16 (7-7), while Ithaca moved to 26-6 (12-0).

Ithaca 11, Stevens 10
After a scoreless first for Stevens, Ithaca grabbed the early lead with three in its half of the inning off six hits. The Ducks responded however with junior Amanda DiLeo's sacrifice fly in the second, followed by junior Jessica Rees' RBI bases-loaded walk in the third.

Freshman starter Christine LaRochelle tossed back-to-back scoreless frames in the second and third to keep the deficit to one, before sophomore Lauren Shirley blasted the Ducks into the lead with a two-out grand slam in the fourth.

The lead didn't last long however as the Bombers answered the Ducks rally with seven runs of their own in the fourth, keyed by seven hits and a walk, to re-take the 10-6 lead.

Stevens battled back again with two in the fifth off an RBI double from DiLeo and an RBI single from sophomore Farryl Groder, before tying the game with two in the sixth.

Shirley sparked the rally with a one-out homer, her second of the game, before junior Emily Sellitti scored off an Ithaca infield error. Ithaca was once again able to answer though, pushing across a run in the sixth off a bases-loaded walk to seal Stevens' loss.

Shirley led all hitters with five RBIs off a pair of homers, while DiLeo drove in two from the nine-spot in the order off a 1-for-2 game. Groder went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and senior Gavriella Risman-Jones went 2-for-5 with a run.

Ithaca 9, Stevens 0
Ithaca put up two early off a two-out triple in the first, before adding to it two innings later with four in the third. Stevens threatened in the fourth with a runner on second with one out, but Ithaca retired the next two to keep the deficit intact.

Stevens kept Ithaca off the board in the bottom of the fourth before going down in order in the fifth, leading to Ithaca's run-rule walk-off in the fifth.

The Bombers put the lead=off hitter on with a walk, and drove her in two batters later off a pair of extra base hits. Down eight runs in the fifth, the game was called due to the run rule.

Sophomore Corinne Loncar, sophomore Olivia Gemma, and freshman Madison Telles accounted for Stevens' three hits, while freshman pitcher Marissa Cappelo struck out three in the loss.
