ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 23, 2016) – Senior
Greg Jakusik tossed a complete game to help the Stevens Institute of Technology split a doubleheader against St. John Fisher College Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 20-12 and 11-3 in the Empire 8 Conference with the split, while Fisher is 22-7, and 10-1 in the E8. The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 12 p.m.
GAME 1 (Fisher 4, Stevens 1)
Stevens was no-hit by Fisher's Terry Engles; it was the Cardinals second no-hitter of the season. The Ducks scored a run in the second, as junior
Zeph Walters walked and moved to third on a wild pitch and groundout. Classmate
Harrison Kaye reached on an error to score Walters, and the Ducks led 1-0 after two.
The Cardinals got a run back in the third, as Cody Wiktorski knocked home a run with an RBI double. The hosts finished the scoring in the fifth, tacking on a pair of unearned runs of a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.
The Ducks had two runners on in the sixth, but were unable to score. Senior
Jonathan Toro stole a bag and drew a walk for the visitors, while freshman
Danny Poidomani fanned the only two hitters he faced.
Nate Roethel had three hits in the game for Fisher, as Engles walked five and struck out five in the no-hit victory.
GAME 2 (Stevens 3, Fisher 1)
Marc Isenker held the Ducks hitless in the first two games of the nightcap, before senior
Jayson Yano laced a 2-1 pitch to left field to plate a run for Stevens' first hit of the afternoon. After giving up singles in the second and third, Jakusik allowed just one more hit the rest of the afternoon, a single in the seventh inning.
Isenker and Jakusik traded zeroes again until the top of the ninth inning. Junior
Nolan Bennett reached on an error and then swiped second base. After senior
Nick Sieber also reached on an error, Isenker was chased from the game. Junior
Michael Mule' hit an RBI single to right to score Bennett, and Sieber would come home on a wild pitch to put Stevens up 3-0.
Jack Trotman walked to lead-off the ninth for Fisher and moved to third on a wild pitch and ground out. Scott Eisenmenger would end the shutout bid with an RBI groundout, but Jakusik would get a fly out for his first complete game of the season.
Yano and Mule' each had two hits in the nightcap, while Jakusik struck out four and only walked two.
Isenker struck out seven in eight and third innings, walking just one hitter
