Softball Earns Upset In Split With No. 19 Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 26, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team (21-17) handed No. 19 Moravian College (30-4) just its fourth loss of the season Tuesday with a 5-3 win in game one of a non-conference doubleheader.

After a 5-1 loss in game two, Stevens settled for the split with its nationally-ranked opponent.

Stevens 5, Moravian 3
After trading zeroes in the first, Moravian took the one-run lead in the second off a solo homer to right center. Stevens stranded one runner in the third in an attempt to answer, before breaking through with two in the fourth off a two-run homer from sophomore Olivia Gemma

Moravian battled back with the tying run in the fourth, but after going down in order in the fifth, Stevens' lineup exploded for three in the sixth to break the deadlock.

Junior Amanda DiLeo sparked the rally with a leadoff single, followed by a double from senior Gavriella Risman-Jones to put runners on second and third. Sophomore Farryl Groder drove in the go-head run with an RBI single to left in the next at bat, before sophomore Corinne Loncar delivered the big blow with a two-run double to left center.

Moravian got one back with a solo shot in the sixth, but freshman pitcher Marissa Cappello slammed the door on any comeback by retiring six of the final seven batters in relief to seal Stevens' upset win.

Loncar and Gemma each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run to lead the Ducks offensively, while senior pitcher Brianna Sandone earned her sixth win of the season after striking out two in five innings of work.

Cappello earned the first save in the history of the program after tossing two innings of one-hit ball in relief.

Moravian 5, Stevens 1
Moravian struck first with a pair of runs in the first, and held off Stevens' ensuing rallies as base runners in the second and third were unable to come around to score.

Cappello held the deficit to two by retiring the side in order in third before working around a bases-loaded situation in the fourth, but Moravian was able to break back through with three in the fifth off a pair of hits.

The Ducks got one back in the seventh with junior Emily Sellitti's bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score pinch-running junior Gina Schnecker, but it's as close as they would get as Moravian escaped further trouble by striking out the final two batters of the game.

Sophomore Lauren Shirley went 2-for-3 to lead the Ducks at the plate, while Sellitti tallied Stevens' only RBI. Cappello took the loss despite surrendering just two earned runs in six innings.
