Women’s Lacrosse Posts Shutout Against Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 3, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team put-up its first shutout since 2007 Sunday in a dominant 18-0, Empire 8 Conference win over Alfred University in Hoboken.

The win was the third in-a-row for the Ducks, raising their record to 5-4 (2-1), while Alfred fell to 4-7 (0-3) with the loss.

The Ducks last shutout came in a 15-0 win over Trinity University (D.C.) on April 22, 2007, and the 18-goal margin was the biggest since the Ducks beat College of Mt. St. Vincent 19-1 in the 2014 season opener.

Junior Kathleen Kalbian led the Ducks with four goals off six shots, while junior Mary Beth Irwin, senior Erika Wilcox, junior Laura Roberts, junior Jess Leiby, and sophomore Bridget Reed each scored twice. Junior Mariel Haubrich tallied four assists and a goal, and scooped-up two ground balls.

Sophomore Stephanie Schnelzer, freshman Alex Samper, and senior Angela Bauroth each tallied a save to combine for the shutout in the cage.

Stevens dominated offensive possession throughout the game, out-shooting Alfred 39-6 including a 27-2 margin in shots on goal. Defensively the Ducks forced 18 Alfred turnovers, and held the Saxons to 4-for-11 on clears.

After going scoreless over the game's first five minutes, Wilcox connected on a free-position shot to give Stevens the 1-0 lead. Kalbian and freshman Mackenzie Metzler followed with scores soon after, before Roberts' free-position goal with 14 minutes remaining put Stevens up 4-0.

Wilcox continued the run with a goal off a feed from Haubrich two minutes later, before goals from Reed and Leiby made it 7-0. Kalbian and Metzler ballooned the advantage to nine with 6:30 to go, followed by Haubrich's goal to end the half.

Kalbian and Irwin quickly made it 12-0 with scores three minutes into the second, before two more from Irwin and Roberts put the Ducks up 14 with 21:39 remaining.

Reed converted her free-position opportunity shortly after, followed by goals from Kalbian and senior Mackenzie Swartout to cap the scoring at 18.

The Ducks will close-out their homestand Tuesday when they host No. 3 The College of New Jersey at 7 p.m.
