HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 8, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team scored 10 first quarter goals en route to a 22-0 victory over Houghton College Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Houghton fell to 2-8, 0-4 in the E8.
Stevens tallied the first marker 3:17 into the game, as senior
Colin Sawula scored on a feed from junior
Connor Towne. The senior duo of
Andrew Scrutchfield and
Matt Ferentini scored 37 seconds apart to extend the lead to three, and junior
Tim Leahey netted two straight tallies to push the gap to five. Four other Ducks would add goals before Leahey capped off his hat trick with 12 seconds left in the first.
Sophomore
JP Southren potted a pair of goals 20 ticks apart to open the second, and senior
Anthony Raposo collected a goal and pair of helpers in the first three quarters alone. Southren completed his hat trick with 8:38 remaining. Freshmen
Zach Eberding,
Roy Standing and
Ryan Kelly each scored their first collegiate goals in the rout.
Southren led the Ducks with eight shots, while junior
Jan Schoonen and sophomore
Dallas Creamer each forced a pair of turnovers. Freshman
Nicholas Carnovale won 13-of-15 faceoffs and picked up a team best 10 ground balls, while sophomore
Scott Wedgeworth was 9-of-10 with six ground balls.
Chris Bucciarelli made eight saves for the Highlanders, who received two shots from Austin Andryshak.
The Ducks will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Hartwick College at 4 p.m.
