PITTSFORD, N.Y. (May 13, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was eliminated from the Empire 8 Conference Tournament with a 9-6 setback to St. John Fisher College Friday.
The Ducks dropped to 26-15, while Fisher moved to 32-10. Stevens will now await their fate in seeing if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals. Bids will be announced early Monday morning.
The Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, pushing a run across with a pair of walks and two hit batters. Fisher added three more in the frame on a fielder's choice which scored two, and finally recorded a hit, an RBI single from Malcolm Kelsey.
In the third, the top-seeded Cardinals tacked on an additional run, courtesy of a passed ball. Stevens got the board in the top of the sixth. With no one out, junior
Nolan Bennett reached on a fielder's choice, and cleanup hitter
Zeph Walters belted a two-run home run to right field.
A throwing error in the home seventh added another run to the Fisher total, and RBI hits by Joe Simmons and Kelsey added two more runs. Senior
Bret Viola entered in the seventh and escaped before any more harm was done.
The Ducks cut the lead in half in the top of the eighth, as Walters drilled his second two-run home run to right, nearly in the identical spot as the first. With two on and two out, reliever Ryan Felske recorded a strikeout to end the inning. A home run in the eighth by Fisher put the hosts back up five, but Walters once again came up big in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded, the junior ripped a two-run single down the right field line to score seniors
Jonathan Toro and
Jayson Yano. That would be as close as they would get, as reliever Loukas Brigham retired the next two hitters.
Bennett went 2-for-5 while Walters was 3-for-5 with six RBI's. Senior
Greg Jakusik tossed five and two thirds innings out of the bullpen, striking out two while surrendering four runs. Viola, along with classmates
Danny McIntyre and
Ryan Patterson combined for five strikeouts in two and a third innings.
