HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 10, 2016) – The No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Vassar College on Saturday.
The Ducks move to 4-0-0 on the year while Vassar dropped to 1-3-0.
The Ducks had the best chance of the early portion of the game. Just three minutes in, sophomore
Zisi Komar broke in on a pass from classmate
Olivia Butera and fired a shot that keeper Stephanie Tapolsky deflected off to the side for a save. Vassar put a pair of shots on net, but junior
Lindsey Mahnken made both saves.
Nearly 20 minutes into the game, Amanda McFarland of Vassar took a turn at goal but Mahnken made the initial before diving to smother the follow-up. Freshman
Julia Panko broke the scoreless tie with 12:58 left in the half. Panko weaved around defenders before taking a rip that glanced off the post and bounced in for the rookie's third tally of the year.
McFarland recorded the first shot of the second stanza but Mahnken made the stop. Senior
Raba Nassif looked to extend the Stevens lead in the 60th minute, but her cross was parried away by Tapolsky. With 24 minutes left, Kelsey Hamm took a shot but Mahnken once again was there. With 16:42 left, the Ducks finally doubled the lead, as junior
Gabby Pagkalinawan took a pass from senior
Gabby Mathelier and deposited the ball into the net for her first of the year.
Komar and Panko tied for the team lead with three shots, while Mahnken stopped five shots in the victory. Mathelier added her first assist of the season, giving her 11 points in four games.
The Ducks will take on New York University in day two of the Engineering Cup at 3:30 p.m.
