HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 11, 2016) – Sophomore
Misha Brewster scored twice to lead the No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime win over New York University Sunday.
The Ducks, who dropped a 1-0 decision to NYU last year, moved to 5-0-0 on the year while the Violets dropped to 3-1-0. Stevens regained the Engineering Cup after NYU had taken it last year with the win. Steph Ho of NYU was named Defensive Most Valuable Player while
Raba Nassif was tabbed Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Brewster, who made her first start of the year, got the Ducks on the board in the eighth minute. Nassif intercepted a pass and threaded the needle to Brewster, who put her shot into the back of the net. In the 23rd minute, sophomore
Zisi Komar had a chance to double the lead, but Cassie Steinberg made the stop.
1:42 after the Steinberg save, NYU evened the score. Alex Benedict played a long ball through to Teressa Fazio, and Fazio beat a diving keeper. Komar would eventually get goal with 12:47 left in the first half. Nassif sent a corner kick in that junior
Megan Lynes headed off the post. The rebound deflected right to Komar, who chested the ball down and finished for her fourth marker of the year.
In the 64th minute, the Violets answered back. Mckennah Spagnola ripped a shot from 25 yards out that glanced off the crossbar. Off the bar, the ball went straight down and eluded the Stevens goalie to even the score at two. Stevens's best chance came with just under 7:30 to go, as junior
Gabby Pagkalinawan dribbled around Steinberg and fed Komar. Komar's attempt sailed over the bar. With 1:31 left, senior
Rachel Chavkin tried to pounce on a loose ball, but Steinberg smothered it.
Stevens had multiple chances in the first overtime session, but Steinberg was up to task, making three saves. The Ducks finally capitalized on the pressure, as Komar zig-zagged through the Violets defense, finally making a pass that Brewster one-touched for the goal.
Brewster notched her first career-multi goal outing, while Komar had seven shots. The Ducks as a unit outshot NYU 28-7. Junior
Lindsey Mahnken and sophomore
Madi Chollett combined to make three saves.
Steinberg made 11 saves in the setback.
Stevens is back in action next Saturday for its Empire 8 Conference opener against Hartwick College.
