ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 17, 2016) – Sophomore
Zisi Komar scored in the 73rd minute to lead the No. 8 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Hartwick Saturday.
The Ducks move to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Hartwick dropped to 4-2, 0-1 in the E8.
The Hawks put the first two shots of the game wide before Stevens countered with four, but only one on goal which was saved. Stevens peppered Hartwick with 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, while the hosts had five. The visiting Ducks also doubled the edge in corner kicks 4-2, but neither side was able to push a goal across.
One of Stevens better chances came in the 60th minute off the foot of junior
Gabby Pagkalinawan, but Hartwick keeper Megan McGillycuddy made the stop. Just two minutes later, the Ducks continued to buzz, as this time sophomore
Olivia Butera rang a shot off the crossbar.
After failing to convert on corner kicks in the 69th and 70th minutes, Komar finally found the back of the net. Senior
Raba Nassif sent a ball in off a corner and it ended up on the foot of Komar, who deposited it into the back of net to tie her for the team lead with five goals.
Stevens held the fort down for the finally 17 minutes, holding Hartwick shot less to preserve the 1-0 victory.
Nassif and Komar each had six shots while senior
Gabby Mathelier and Pagkalinawan had two apiece. Junior
Lindsey Mahnken picked up the shutout for Stevens.
McGillycuddy made five saves for the Hawks in the setback.
