NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (September 14, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up its sixth straight win with a 29-27, 25-14, 25-16 sweep of New Paltz Wednesday.
The Ducks moved to 9-1, and won all five matches they played at New Paltz this year. The Hawks fell to 3-6 with the loss.
Stevens fell behind 6-5 early in the first frame, but senior
Mary Tobin slammed home a kill, than served up four straight points. With the Ducks up 12-9, the hosts used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 15-13 and forced Stevens into a timeout. The timeout worked, as freshman
Casey King rolled off three in a row on the service line.
Senior
Christina Sciarra pounded home a kill which brought up set point at 24-22, but New Paltz tallied four of the five to force their own set point. Finally, Sciarra added a kill to even the stanza at 27, and setter
Brianna Perez got credited with a kill off a block error to once push Stevens ahead. A Hawk attack error finally handed set one to the visitors.
The Ducks raced to a 5-1 lead before New Paltz within two thanks to back-to-back kills from the middle spot. From then on it was all cardinal and white, as Stevens used an 8-0 spurt to pull ahead and never look back. Hitting was key in all three sets, but Stevens committed only two attack errors as NP had nine.
Perez and Sciarra each served multiple point rallies in the final frame, as Stevens hurried out to a 13-4 edge. The Hawks crawled back to as close as six, but Sciarra ended the comeback dreams with a kill, sending the Ducks home with a win.
Sciarra finished with 13 kills, while Perez notched a double-double over 31 assists and 13 digs. Freshman
Casey King also had a double-double, with 14 digs and 10 kills with junior
Sydni Horner totaling a match-high 22 digs.
The Ducks will host their annual Ducks Classic Friday and Saturday, playing four matches.
