HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 23, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team will be hosting Nazareth and Ithaca in an Empire 8 Conference tri-match Saturday.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Naz and Stevens will faceoff at 11 a.m. while Ithaca and the Golden Flyers meet at 1:30 p.m. The day concludes with Ithaca and Stevens squaring off at 4 p.m.
YOU LOOK FAMILIAR
The three teams are the last three Empire 8 Champions, as IC topped Stevens for the crown last year, with Stevens beating Nazareth in 2014. The three years prior saw Nazareth claim the title. In fact, one of these three powerhouses have been E8 Champs every year since 2000.
NAZ REPORT
The Golden Flyers enter with a 9-3 overall mark, including a 3-0 sweep of Houghton in their E8 opener. Cady Messmer leads Naz with 136 kills on the year.
BOMBER STATUS
Ithaca comes into the tri with an 11-3 record, including wins over then-ranked No. 20 Clarkson and No. 14 Carnegie Mellon. The Bombers also took then No. 3 Juniata to five sets before falling.
DUCKS CLASSIC RECAP
Stevens went 4-0 at their home tournament last weekend, picking up wins over Hartwick, Oswego, Oneonta and Stockton. They avenged a 3-0 loss to the Ospreys last year by handing them a 3-0 defeat this season.
STINE HITS FOR A GRAND
Senior
Christina Sciarra became the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills as she pounded home the final point of the match against Hartwick to reach the mark.
NO HAIN, NO GAIN
Freshman
Sara Hain shined at the Ducks Classic, recording six kills in three of the four matches. Against Stockton, Hain recorded five total blocks, including three straight in the third set.
BOILING STEW
Fellow freshman
Shelby Stewart set career-highs against Oneonta, tallying nine kills (.667 hitting percentage) and seven total blocks (one solo, six assists). Stewart leads the Ducks with 38 total blocks.
HOOK 'EM HORNS
Junior
Sydni Horner climbed over the 1,500 dig plateau last weekend. Horner currently sits third place all-time on the Ducks career list for digs with 1,560.
DON'T HAZE
Hazing is prohibited by Stevens Institute of Technology and by the Department of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation. Further, hazing is against the law in New Jersey. These acts are defined as any behavior that is physically, emotionally or psychologically abusive to an individual or selected group of individuals for the purpose of gaining entrance or acceptance into an established group. An individual's consent to hazing or initiation is not a defense for the behavior. #SPEAK UP
