HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 29, 2016) – After picking up two wins last weekend, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team looks to earn four more at the Utica Tournament this weekend.
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
The two-day tournament sees Stevens playing Union and Plattsburgh State at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively Friday night before taking on Utica and SUNY-Potsdam at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. The Utica match will be an Empire 8 Conference match.
E8 RECAP
The Ducks bested Nazareth and Ithaca last Saturday in straight sets, moving to 15-1 and 3-0 in the Empire 8.
KING OF KINGS
Freshman
Casey King had 22 kills, 21 digs and nine total blocks in the two matches last weekend. King is second on the team with 125 kills and tied for the team lead with 24 service aces.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Union and Potsdam each have recorded 10 wins this season, while Plattsburgh sits at 8-7. Utica has struggled in the E8, going 0-3 in their first three contests.
STEWIN' AND BREWIN'
Freshman
Shelby Stewart had a fine weekend, totaling 12 kills and nine total rejections against Naz and Ithaca. Against the Golden Flyers, Stewart slugged .636, totaling seven kills on 11 attempt with no errors.
AWARD SEASON
For her efforts, Stewart becomes the second Duck to claim Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honors. Two weeks ago, it was King who was honored.
KEY SUB
With Ithaca storming back in the second set and cutting the Stevens lead from eight down to one, freshman
Kayla Muraoka was tabbed to deliver a perfect pass to set up the Ducks offense. Muraoka handled the hard serve, and the Ducks were able to win the point.
ALWAYS TOBIN TIME
Senior
Mary Tobin leads the team with 140 kills so far this season, including 20 over the two matches last weekend.
