HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2016) – Junior
Brianna Evans finished with 12 kills to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Hunter College Wednesday.
The Ducks moved to 4-1 on the year with the 25-12, 25-8, 25-20 victory. Hunter evened out at 3-3.
After falling behind 2-1, Stevens would tally four straight markers, including back-to-back service aces from sophomore
Emily Piekarski. A block error by the Ducks cut the lead to 14-8, but Piekarski rolled off five more points, forcing Hunter into its final timeout. The Hawks could get no closer than 10, as junior libero
Sydni Horner finished the set off with consecutive service aces.
Sophomore
Brianna Perez fired up nine straight tallies to open set two, with Evans would drill home two kills during the spurt. Hunter got within eight, but eight of the next 10 points went in favor of Stevens to stretch the lead back to double-digits. A Hawks attack error ended the frame, putting the hosts up 2-0.
Hunter got a service ace of their own to even the third and final set at eight, but Stevens tallied six of the next eight to go ahead seemingly for good. A Perez service ace extended the edge to seven at 22-15, but the visitors got back-to-back kills to cap off a 3-0 run and get within four. But Evans smashed a kill and then followed it up with an ace to bring up match point. Two straight Hawk points staved off match point, but junior
Mckenzie Kingsbury ended the rally with a kill.
The Ducks tallied 15 total aces, while surrendering only five. Piekarski and Perez combined for six of them while freshman
Shelby Stewart recorded a kill and two total blocks. Stevens hit a blistering .380, including .571 in the final stanza.
Julia Connolly led Hunter with 10 kills.
Stevens is back in action on Friday, taking on Fredonia and Clarkson University in the New Paltz Invitational.
