HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 14, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team scored the first seven points of the game en route to a 93-45 victory over Alfred University in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Canavan Arena Saturday.
Graduate student
Kaitlyn Astel led the Ducks with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and junior
Megan Brown had 14 points and five rebounds as Stevens improved to 5-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Amanda Off also tallied 22 points for Alfred as the Saxons dropped its 11 consecutive game in falling to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in the E8.
Turning Point
- For the second consecutive game, Brown opened the game's scoring with a fast-break layup off the opening tip.
- After an Alfred turnover, Astel scored on a short jumper to extend the Stevens lead to four.
- Junior Brooke Stoddard altered an Alfred shot on the ensuing play, which led to an Astel three, off of a crisp pass from Erica Guketlov.
- Off's jumper put the Saxons on the board at 8:28 of the period.
- The Ducks would respond with their second seven-point run of the game to open a 14-2 lead.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens led wire-to-wire for the second straight game.
- The Ducks shot a scorching 63% from behind the arc, sinking 10 threes on 16 attempts.
- Equally as strong from inside the three-point line, Stevens shot over 50% from the field for the second straight game.
- All 12 players contributed to a 46-29 rebounding edge for Stevens.
- Owners of the stingiest defense in the conference, the Ducks held an opponent under 50 points for the third time this season.
- With the game out of reach, the Ducks tightened their defense even further, holding Alfred to a mere four points on 2-of-14 shooting.
- Astel's reached double figures for the 10th time this season, including five efforts of 20 points or more.
- Stoddard scored four points, grabbed three rebounds, blocked two shots, dished out a pair of assists and had two steals in her first career start.
- The win was the 19th in a row for Stevens over Alfred dating back to the 2007-08 season.
- The 93-point effort was the most for women's basketball since a 100-48 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology on Jan. 23, 2009.
- The Ducks held the edge in points in the paint, points off turnovers, fast-break points, bench points and second-chance points.
- In her second career start, freshman Alison Criswell recorded a career-best 10 points.
Unsung Heroes
- Sophomore Megan Anderson came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points in 18 minutes.
- Senior Erica Guketlov tallied a game-high five assists as Stevens had a season-high 22 assists as a team.
