Hot Start Sends Men’s Basketball To Blowout Win Over Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 14, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team outscored Alfred 35-18 in the first half Saturday evening to key an 81-49 Empire 8 win in Hoboken.

The win moved Stevens to 10-3 (4-1), while Alfred fell to 5-10 (2-4). The 18 points allowed in the half were the least for Stevens this season, besting the mark of 19 set during Friday night's win over Houghton.

Junior Chris Cosgrove led the way offensively for Stevens with a season-high 16 points thanks to 4-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc, while seniors Evan Klimchak and Patrick Barron went for 15 and 12 respectively. Five more Ducks scored at least five in a game that saw 12 different players score.

As a team Stevens shot 42 percent from the field and 41 percent from three, while holding Alfred to just 28 percent shooting from the field and 24 percent from beyond the arc.

Stevens jumped out to a 17-2 lead seven minutes in, before freshman Dylan Walsh's free throw just past the midway point made it 22-6. Barron continued to pour it on with a three during the seven minute mark to put Stevens up 20, followed by two from the line five minutes later to make it 21.

Alfred responded with four unanswered with under two to play, but the first-half damage had already been done as despite being held scoreless over the final two minutes, the Ducks still took a 35-18 advantage into the locker room.

Stevens continued its comfortable lead early in the second, extending it to 20 off a Barron three four minutes in. A small 9-4 spurt by Alfred brought the Saxons to within 17, but a jumper from Spencer Cook followed by six straight from Klimchak ballooned the advantage to 25 midway through the half.

A layup from freshman Michael Zignorski put the lead above 30 with under eight to play, giving Stevens more than enough cushion as Alfred managed just eight points over the final five minutes of play to seal the Stevens rout.

Stevens will wrap up its three-game homestand Tuesday when it hosts Ithaca at 8 p.m. at Canavan.
