HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 28, 2017) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball senior
Evan Klimchak drilled a three with six seconds remaining Saturday evening, sending the Ducks to a 78-77 win over Utica in Hoboken.
With the game tied at 75, Utica nailed a jumper with 18 ticks left on the clock to pull ahead by two. Klimchak hit the three on the ensuing possession, before freshman
Spencer Cook blocked Bennito Ayarza's game-winning attempt on the other end to seal the victory.
The win moved Stevens to 13-4 (7-2), while Utica fell to 5-13 (5-4).
Klimchak finished with 24 in addition to five rebounds and three assists, while senior
Patrick Barron scored 17. Sophomore
Jayson Winick went for nine points and four boards, and sophomore
Ryan Coffey scored seven with three rebounds.
Stevens' bench outscored Utica by 10, while as a team Stevens held the advantage in the paint 13-9.
Five straight from Klimchak during the 13-minute mark put Stevens ahead 21-15, but Utica responded with a 6-0 spurt to knot the game at 21. The teams deadlocked again at 23 midway through the half, before a 10-0 Stevens run highlighted by a Barron three-point play gave the Ducks the double-digit lead with under six to play.
Back-to-back threes from Cook and Klimchak ballooned the lead to 19, but Utica answered with a three-point play of its own from junior Ivan Iton to cut the Ducks lead to 16 heading into the break.
Utica chipped away with an 11-4 run to start the second, before a three with 12:33 left on the clock sliced the lead to five. Klimchak ended the spurt with a three to extend the lead back to eight, but a 9-4 run from the Pioneers cut the advantage to three with under nine to go.
Utica came all the way back with 5:18 on the clock when a jumper deadlocked things at 65 and again at 67, before Klimchak promptly put the Ducks back in front with a jumper with under four to play. Stevens maintained that lead until the Pioneers tied the game at 75 with just over a minute remaining, but Kllimchak's clutch three extinguished any comeback hopes.
Stevens will wrap up its two-game homestand Tuesday night against Hartwick, before playing the first of five straight on the road February 3 at Elmira.
